  • The race begins on the road above the East Tennis Courts near the park entrance located at 69th and Yamhill. The course begins with a downhill section heading north toward Yamhill Street. At the north gate turn left and continue on the road uphill toward the parking lot where you will be directed past the covered picnic area to the entrance of the Red Trail. You will follow the Red Trail one loop around the mountain in a counter-clockwise direction where you will enjoy scenic views of downtown Portland to the west and Mt. Hood to the east. After encircling the mountain for the first time and passing the Volcano Playground, you will return to the main parking lot area where volunteers will direct you east, back down the road to the entrance of the Green Trail. You will follow the Green Trail -- clockwise this time -- for another loop around the mountain. After passing the East Tennis Courts and picnic area, and going through the wooded area, you'll come back out to the road: please keep to the gravel trail on the left side of the road. And, don't forget to look east for another view of Mt. Hood as you run downhill. At the bottom of the hill above the off-leash dog park you will be directed across the road where you will return to the trail. Continue on the Green Trail running between the two large reservoirs -- enjoying more views of Portland to the east -- past the West Tennis Courts near Salmon Street, across the road, and up and around the basketball court and amphitheater -- and below the main restrooms -- returning to the parking lot area. Volunteers will provide water and electrolyte drinks each time you pass through the parking lot area, and ensure you head out on the correct trail. After returning to the parking lot area for the second time you will be directed west past the basket ball court to the entrance of the Blue Trail located across from the covered picnic area. Carefully cross the road and proceed downhill for one final loop counter-clockwise around the mountain. The Blue Trail proceeds past the West Tennis Courts toward the large reservoir and includes a variety of running surfaces including wooded trails, concrete walkways, pavement, and even stairs (95 of them!). The route also goes around each of the three reservoirs as it winds its way to the top. After reaching the top, the race will finish with a single clockwise .3-mile loop on the road.
